Skin concerns

Molluscum contagiosum

Common viral infection especially in children, with small, shiny, rounded papules. Usually benign and self-limited.

What is molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a skin infection caused by a poxvirus. It is manifested by small papules of skin colour or pinkish, with bright appearance and a characteristic central depression (umbilization).

It is very common in children, especially between the ages of 2 and 10, and usually self-limited — it resolves spontaneously in months to years. In adults it appears less frequently and may be transmitted by close contact, including intimate contact.

Signs and symptoms

  • Small papules (2-5 mm), rounded, skin colour or pinkish, with characteristic brightness.
  • Central depression visible (umbilisation).
  • They may appear isolated or in groups.
  • Frequent locations — trunk, armpits, folds, face; in adults sometimes in the genital region.
  • Usually painless and without itching, except if irritated.
  • In children with atopic dermatitis they may appear in greater numbers and spread more.

contagion

The molluscum contagiosum is transmitted by direct contact with infected skin or shared objects (towels, bath toys). It can self-innoculate — the child who scratches an injury can spread it to other areas.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is clinical — the appearance is characteristic. In an online consultation, the dermatologist evaluates photographs of injuries and a questionnaire on distribution, evolution and context (children in school or kindergarten, sports activities).

Options for treatment

The approach depends on the number of injuries, patient age, location and impact.

Expectant surveillance

In small children with few injuries, it is often the recommended approach — spontaneous resolution is the rule. Avoid unnecessary uncomfortable procedures.

Dermatological procedures

In numerous, uncomfortable or exposed lesions, there are procedures performed in the office to remove them. Case-by-case assessments.

Topical application

There are topical options that can be useful in certain contexts. They were indicated by the dermatologist after evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

And is it dangerous?

Nope. The molluscum contagiosum is a benign and self-limited infection. Doesn't leave any sequels in most cases. There are consultations where intervention is not necessary.

Can the child go to school?

Yeah. Infection does not prevent school attendance. Simple care — not sharing towels, covering injuries during contact activities — reduces the risk of transmission.

Are you going to leave marks?

Usually not. There may be little pink spots that disappear over time. In cases with procedures or with many inflamed lesions, small changes may persist.

Is online consultation for molluscum contagiosum?

Yeah. The diagnosis is clinical by photography and the plan depends on the number of injuries and the impact. The dermatologist indicates whether surveillance is sufficient or whether it is justified face-to-face evaluation for the procedure.

Evaluate the molluscum contagiosum with a dermatologist

Send pictures of the injuries. A dermatologist evaluates and proposes the best approach for your case or for your child.
